Top o' th' Town

Although the boundaries of  "Top o' th' Town are not precisely defined, it is the area around St. Peter's Church, and the ancient market cross which used to stand at the bottom of Godley Lane (now Ormerod Road). The town well (Shorey Well) was situated by the bank of the River Brun just a short distance away.

With the rapid development of the area in the 1850's Top o' th' Town took in the terraces and back to back houses that sprang up behind Bank Parade and in between Church Street and the Canal Embankment, round Engine Street, Engine Court and Maltkiln Street.

Today the area has been largely redeveloped, and away from the river very little of the original street layout or housing remains.
