This collection of stones, which
look as though they could have come from any demolition
site, is Shorey Well, rebuilt in the gardens of the former
Grammar School at the junction of Colne Road and Bank
Parade. The well was the town's main source of the fresh
water, and originally stood on the bank of the river Brun
about 200 metres from its present site. The well was reached
by a short track, Shoreybank, from the bottom of Godley lane
(now Ormerod Road). The Market cross (also on this site) was
situated in the market place, in front of the present
Sparrowhawk Hotel, the whole forming the area known as
Top o' th' Town.
