Hebden and Duxbury's
Refeshment Bar, Market Street, Burnley circa 1880
This photograph shows "Hebden &
Duxbury's "EMPIRE" Refreshment Bar" in Market Street
Burnley, behind the Market Hall around 1880. The backs of
the shops on Standish Street can be seen on the right of the
picture behind the stall. The houses on the left are on the
other side of the River Brun, which runs in a deep open
culvert behind the stall . The main speciality seems to be
Pie and Peas, but Tobacco and Cigars are also sold. One of
the proprietors is standing inside. The photographer seems
to have attracted the attention of a number of young
customers! The word "Empire" was freely used as an
expression of wealth, power and enduring success, in a
similar way to "Dreadnought" "Victory" or "Acme"
