Ths is St. Peter's Church, the
Parish Church of Burnley which is situated in a wide loop of the
River Brun, on Church Street. A "Church of Burnley" was
first mentioned by Hugh de la Val, in 1121, when he succeeded to
the confiscated estate of Robert de Lacy. The oldest part of the
present building is the lower part of the tower, which is
fifteenth century. The main part of the church was built in the
sixteenth century. The higher part of the Nave, with the
clerestory windows which can be seen above date from 1853 when
the church was extensively renovated
