Images of Hackney
This (rather poor quality) image is of the Church of St John at Hackney. The church was designed in 1798 by James Spiller in the shape of a Greek cross, to hold 4,000 people. It replaced the old church, dedicated to St Augustine, whose 16th Century tower still stands to the south. The spire and porch were added in 1812 - 13. The church was restored after a fire in 1955. The parish stocks and whipping post are preserved in the churchyard

William Hebden (b.1794) and Frances Akehurst were married here on 1st January 1813.

The witnesses, Benjamin Crook and William Jackson probably made a few shillings out of attending weddings at the church as "professional witnesses" they appear in several entries on the page in the register!
