The Grammar School was originally sited adjacent to St. Peter's Churchyard The building was was demolished in 1807. The second school was built on Bank Parade at the top of School Lane in 1693, and in turn was replaced by the building shown in the these images. The "Old Grammar School" building (pictured right) was built in 1873. It was extended in 1901 and 1934 and was used until the new Grammar School building opened at Byron Street in 1959/60. The picture below, taken around 1900, shows the view looking up School Street (now School Lane) and Colne Road, with the "Gothic Houses" nearest the camera (see map).

I attended this school from 1957 to 1959, and then moved with the school to the new building.  I left in 1964. I can't say it was a happy time, the old school was a dark and foreboding place, and the time spent there was mainly filled with unremitting terror.
